so dave, who are you?
I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, and I started studying classical piano at the age of four, adding drumset to the mix by age thirteen. I also developed an acute interest in the bagpipe when I was a child and got the chance to study the pipes six years ago. I now have a collection of bagpipes from Scotland, Bulgaria, Russia, and Estonia. Through the years, I generated influences from Jah Wobble, Serge Gainsbourg, Genesis, Neu!, and Hedningarna, as well as the deep traditional music of Scandinavia and the British Isles, and classic jazz and Dub heavyweights like King Tubby and Lee Perry. I’ve got a lot of stuff in my head.
that’s kind of hip, you know. you like ballerinas, i can see.
Yeah, I like the way they move, and the shapes that their bodies make. I love the structure of ballet classes, and the heavy emphasis on use of mirrors. The girls can always look at themselves, and there’s a certain sense of sexy vanity about it all.
purrrrrrrrrrrr……..
Stuff like fragrances and old photographs and my dad’s collection of Frank Sinatra vinyl really suit my fancy, too. There is this really nice soap from Barcelona called Maja that has this perfect packaging – all red and black, and my grandma used to get it when I was a child, and I loved the spicy, old world smell of it. I recently found some and bought it, and it brought out a flood of memory and inspiration. I used the packaging as a basis for the website design.
nostalgia is the window to your soul. where did i come from?
You are an interesting one, indeed… Really, I did an experimental electronic show, “Woodland Calling”, with a band called Liebezeit, and we were supposed to dress up like animals that seemed to be extensions of our personalities. I bought this cat mask at the costume shop, and then the whole “glam cat” thing just took shape. You’re some sort of emotional reaction to something, I just don’t know what. I know that Peter Gabriel’s costumes in the early days of Genesis were the main basis for your creation. Since then, you’ve popped up at various shows and such, and you’ve become a feature in the Dave Jacoby persona. Girls really seem to like you, as well……
I know. I like them too. what about the artists that inspire you?
You know, like the Pop artists, Jasper Johns, Warhol, David Hockney… I really like the way that they glorify mass media and production into an elevated art form. It may be glib, but I also like Dali. I like the way he thinks.
what do you dream at night?
I dream about the moon and water and sunsets. I play soft music to influence my dreams, and for inspiration during an Alpha wave setting. I dream about playing music for ballet classes, and about the city at night. Sometimes I dream about empty lakebeds. They fascinate me, to think that I’m standing in a place where water should be.
yes, the moon. what sums you up?
I just live and dance to the beat of my own drummer, that’s all.
